Melanie
joined the SMART team in October of 2011, bringing with her 10 years of
experience in non-profit development. Prior to her work at SMART, Melanie most
recently served as the Associate Director of Development for the San Francisco
Court Appointed Special Advocate (SFCASA) Program, a non-profit organization
providing dedicated advocacy and mentorship to San Francisco’s children in
foster care—an extremely vulnerable population in urgent need of mental and
general healthcare, specialized education services, and safe and permanent homes.
While at SFCASA, Melanie managed all aspects of fundraising and communications
including individual and institutional giving, grant research and writing, and
the development of strategic donor, community relations, and marketing
materials. Melanie is committed to the SMART mission, and to continuing work to
foster educational opportunities for San Francisco’s underserved youth.
When she’s not working, Melanie frequents farmers’ markets, and enjoys running,
travel, and shuffling her way through dance classes. Melanie graduated from UC
San Diego with a B.A. in Communications, and from San Francisco State
University with a Certificate in Technical and Professional Writing, and an
M.A. in Education with a concentration in Instructional Technologies.

“Independent schools are
constantly
looking to attract
an
applicant pool that is
diverse
in terms of
geographic,
socio-economic,
and
racial differences, yet
they
struggle to find qualified
applicants
who meet the
rigorous
entrance
requirements.
Recently,
SMART
has emerged as an
outstanding
resource for
private
schools in this regard.”
