VOLUNTEERING AT SMART

MENTORING
Mentoring
plays a critical role in the SMART program. Our mentors serve as adult
role models who are neither parents nor teachers, who provide our students
with vital friendship, support, and guidance as they experience new
academic challenges and unfamiliar social environments.
The
most important aspect of mentoring is commitment. We ask our
volunteers to spend at least two hours a week with the student in any
capacity they choose, whether it be eating a meal together, going to
a museum, or just playing on the beach. As many of our students have
experienced disappointment and abandonment in the past, it is crucial
that the mentor be consistent in dedicating this time to his/her mentee.
The
most essential qualifications we seek in our mentors are enthusiasm,
an interest in working with disadvantaged youth, and the ability to
support and guide our students through the program. All mentors will
be provided with a training manual as well as a mandatory training session
designed to prepare them to be effective volunteers.
In order to be
considered for a position as a SMART mentor, you must:
- be at least
21 years old
- submit a completed
volunteer application form
- have an interview
with a member of the SMART staff
- submit to
a criminal background check
TUTORING
All SMART students are assigned individual tutors to help
them adjust to the academic rigors of their new schools. SMART tutors
must be at least 18 years old and must agree to spend 1 day a week during
the 5:30-7:00pm After School Program with the child. Tutors will address
SMART students' academic needs, whether assisting with homework, reinforcing
classroom learning, or improving their time management skills. The screening
process for potential tutors is similar to that of mentors-- volunteers
must complete the application and interview
with a staff member.
After
receiving your application, we will contact you for an interview. If
you have any questions, please contact Cindy Dominguez, Program Associate,
at (415) 865-5400, or email
her.
Thank
you for your time and interest. We look forward to hearing from you.
