BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Bill Brady:  Bill is a Managing Director and Head of Credit Suisse First Boston (CSFB) Global Technology Corporate Finance Department.  He is also a member of the North American Investment Banking Management Committee of CSFB.  Bill has twelve years of investment banking experience, including nine years at Morgan Stanley, where he was Managing Director and Head of the firm’s West Coast Technology Investment Banking Group which he helped build from an emerging business to one of the largest industry groups at the firm.  Bill has worked in the technology industry through many dramatic evolutions over the past 12 years and he has advised hundreds of IPOs, common stock and convertible offerings, and merger and acquisition transactions for technology companies including @Home, 3Com, Adobe, Amazon.com, Broadcom, Cisco, E*Trade, Freeserve, IBM, Intuit, Juniper Networks, MMC Networks, Mortgage.com, MP3.com, Silicon Graphics, Software.com, Verifone, WebTV, and Xilinx.  Bill is a 1987 graduate of Princeton University.


Melisssa Buckley:  Melissa currently works as a consultant to nonprofits and foundations in the San Francisco Bay Area.  Her projects focus on strategy, capacity building, and project-specific research and implementation.  Her clients include the Breakthrough Collaborative, Room to Read, the California HealthCare Foundation, the United Way Bay Area, and the Calvert Foundation.  Prior to working independently, Melissa was a consultant at McKinsey & Company in New York and San Francisco, in Investment Banking at J.P. Morgan in New York, and at the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights in Washington DC.  Melissa graduated from Stanford University with a degree in Human Biology and from Harvard University with a Masters in Public Policy.  Melissa has three young children, ages one to six years old.


Emma Goltz:  Emma and her husband Fred have been student sponsors at SMART since 2003. Currently, Emma is full- time mother to their three young children. Prior to this, she was a manager at the San Francisco office of Bain & Company where she worked with several multinational corporations on corporate strategy and operations from 1998 to 2003. Prior to business school she worked in the financial markets in Dublin and London for six years. Emma holds a joint degree in Economics and Pure Mathematics from Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland and an MBA from INSEAD, in Fontainebleau, France. She is also a board member of the Bay Area division of the March of Dimes.


Jacqueline Schilling-HolmesJacqueline has been actively involved with The SMART Program since becoming a SMART parent in 1999.   Her daughter successfully completed our program in 2003 and was granted a high school scholarship to the prestigious Urban School of San Francisco.  Through her access to quality education and support services, Jacqueline’s daughter began to expand the expectations she had for herself and her future.  In the fall of2007, she will attend Howard University’s Business School and begin their intensive five-year Accounting Program.  Jacqueline’s input on the Board ensures that the families SMART serves are always at the forefront of our decision-making. 


Scott Jordon:  Scott is with Glynn Capital Management.  From 1993-1996 Scott worked at Morgan Stanley in the mergers and acquisitions group in New York and Hong Kong. While at Morgan Stanley, he evaluated strategic acquisitions and financing in a variety of industries, including communications and related fields.  Scott received his undergraduate degree from the University of California at Berkeley in 1993.  In 1999, earned his MBA from the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University, where he worked for Infoseek Corporation in the business development and strategic marketing divisions.  Scott has been actively involved in charitable organizations focusing on education, and joined the SMART Board because of the organization’s mission, goals and ability to have an impact.  As Treasurer and chair of the Finance Committee, Scott serves as Chief Financial Officer of SMART.


Roger Lee:  Roger Lee is one of SMART’s co-founders and currently serves as Vice President and chair of the Development Committee.  Roger is currently a General Partner with Battery Ventures, focusing on investments in enterprise software and Internet infrastructure. Previously, Roger was a co-founder of Corio, a leading managed service provider.  At Corio, Roger first oversaw all business development activities and later became the General Manager of the eCommerce business unit.  Prior to Corio, Roger worked as the Manager of Internet Products at Edify.  In addition, Roger was also the co-founder and President of NetMarket, a software and services company that developed transaction security software for the Internet, acquired by Cendant Corporation in November of 1994.  Roger graduated with distinction from Yale University with a BA of Political Science.


Charles M. Linehan (Chip):  Chip is one of the co-founders of SMART, and serves as the President of its Board of Directors.  Chip is currently a partner at New Enterprise Associates (NEA), a private equity partnership based in Menlo Park, California.  Chip joined NEA in 1992 and specializes in information technology and business services investments, with particular concentration on B2B e-commerce services and application opportunities.  Current board memberships include Atomz.com, BeyondWork, CascadeWorks, eBenefits, ElderHealth, eTranslate, Long Term Care Group, MyCustoms.com, and ppoNEXT.  Chip received a Bachelor of Arts (cum laude) from Harvard University.  Chip became involved with SMART because of his passionate belief in the importance of offering educational opportunities to bright and motivated students regardless of their socioeconomic circumstances.


Matthew Neihaus:  Matt joined Battery in 2007 and focuses on investments in communication services and infrastructure technologies. Prior to Battery, Matt was Director of Strategic Development at VeriSign, a digital infrastructure service company. He joined VeriSign in 2005 when it acquired R4 Global Solutions, Inc, a leading RFID (radio frequency identification) technology firm that Matt co-founded. Previously, Matt was an investor at Telegraph Hill Communications Partners, a firm he co-founded, as well as at J.P. Morgan Capital. At both firms, he concentrated on the communications and technology sectors, investing a total of $233 million in nine companies. Matt began his career as an Associate at J.P. Morgan & Co., handling investment banking transactions for the Mergers and Acquisitions group. He graduated cum laude from Dartmouth College with a B.A. in History.  Matt brings to SMART years of experience working with organizations that provide low-income youth with quality education.  He feels very strongly that the most fruitful investment is one that is made in a child's future. 


Tara L. Phillips:  Tara joined SMART after serving as the National Program Director of the Breakthrough Collaborative.  Tara has committed her professional career to providing non-profits with the leadership and vision necessary to encourage sustainable growth and optimize results. She has designed and implemented program enhancements that aim to increase diversity, and has lectured at numerous conferences as an expert on diversity, youth empowerment, summer learning and curriculum.  She served as a school teacher in Brooklyn and Washington DC and holds her B.S in Policy and Management from Carnegie Mellon University.


Jennifer G. Wright (Director Emeritus):  Jennifer is one of the co-founders of SMART and was SMART’s first Executive Director.  Currently, Jennifer is the Executive Director of E-Learning Works in New York City.  E-Learning Works is a non-profit organization that awards grants to schools and community-based organizations in the field of education technology.  In addition to awarding grants, E-Learning Works administers and evaluates each program it funds.  Before starting SMART, Jennifer served as the Director of Volunteers in Probation (VIP) Program, a mentoring initiative serving youth active in the juvenile probation system in Contra Costa County, California. Jennifer received her Bachelor of Arts from Skidmore College and her Masters in Education from Harvard University.
