Jad Dunning

Jad brings over 13 years of experience in start-up environments and well-established growth companies to his role as President and CEO of DriverSide, Inc. Since 1995, Jad has been at the forefront of developing and growing online consumer services.

Prior to founding DriverSide, Jad was President of StepUp Commerce, which was acquired by Intuit in August 2006.  Earlier, he served as General Manager of Direct Marketing at Peet’s Coffee & Tea, where his oversight over the direct channel resulted in consecutive year-over-year 100% increases in sales growth rate. In 1996, he founded and launched CompareNet, Inc., an online feature comparison site. In 1999, CompareNet was acquired by Microsoft where Jad then led and grew MSN Shopping with revenues growing 60% over the previous year. Jad earned a B.A. at St. Lawrence University and a JD at the University of San Francisco.  An inactive member of the California Bar, he practiced law in San Francisco at the outset of his career.  He also serves as Board Chair of Cathedral School for Boys, an independent K–8 school in San Francisco.  He and his wife Christina live in San Francisco with their two sons Mason and Jack and their dog Isabelle

Quinlan D. Fang

Quinlan is currently the co-founder of a startup that provides career advancement solutions to help individuals realize their full potential. Prior to starting his company, Quinlan was an Associate at Vista Equity Partners, a private equity firm focused on software and technology-enabled companies. At Vista, he completed leveraged buyouts of enterprise software and technology-enabled companies totaling over $1 billion in transaction value. He also served as a Board Observer for three portfolio companies and advised their senior management in implementing various operational and strategic initiatives. Prior to Vista, Quinlan worked in the Mergers & Acquisitions group at UBS Investment Bank where he advised software, internet, network communication and other technology companies in over $2 billion of transactions.

Quinlan graduated from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Science in Economics with concentrations in Finance and Management. He passionately believes that a strong education serves as the foundation for one's future success and has been a volunteer tutor for SMART since 2007.

Michael Ferreboeuf
Michael has served for ten years as the Head of School at The Cathedral School for Boys, a San Francisco independent school for 266 boys in K-8. He received his BA in English from the University of California, Berkeley and his MA in Education Administration from the University of San Francisco. Michael began his career in education as a middle school English teacher at Stuart Hall for Boys and was appointed Head of Middle School at Cathedral School for Boys in 1991 and Head of School in 1999. He is also a founding board member of the Community Preschool at Grace Cathedral whose mission is to provide tuition-free quality preschool education for children in the Tenderloin neighborhood. He is a native of San Francisco and lives with his wife Colleen McGarry, who is an educator in independent schools. They have one daughter, Finegan. Michael's other interests and passions include poetry, creative writing, cooking for his family and friends and coaching CSB's seventh grade basketball team.

John M. Geschke
John is a partner in the Emerging Companies and Public Companies practice groups at and a member of the Cooley Godward Kronish Business department. He joined Cooley Godward Kronish, LLP in 1996 and is a resident in the Palo Alto office. His practice includes the representation of issuers and venture capital investors in the formation and financing of emerging companies as well as counseling emerging companies with respect to mergers and acquisitions, strategic relationships and general corporate matters. He also has substantial experience in representing public companies with respect to their initial public offerings and various other financing and strategic transactions. John also advises public companies operating in a broad range of industries with respect to their reporting requirements and corporate governance obligations. In 2008, John was recognized in Chambers USA as an "Up and Coming" leader in Capital Markets: Debt & Equity in California.

John received a J.D. from Stanford Law School in 1995, graduating with distinction. He received an A.B. from Princeton University in 1992 with a concentration in the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs. He graduated from Princeton with honors and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.

From 1998 to 1999, John was a principal in the corporate finance department of W.R. Hambrecht & Co., an online investment bank, where he helped to design and develop a system for the public offering of securities through a "Dutch Auction" methodology. Prior to initially joining Cooley, John was an associate in the business department of Alston & Bird LLP in Atlanta, Georgia. John is a member of the State Bar of California and the State Bar of Georgia.
 

Emma Goltz

Emma and her husband Fred have been student sponsors at SMART since 2003. Currently, Emma is full- time mother to their three young children. Prior to this, she was a manager at the San Francisco office of Bain & Company where she worked with several multinational corporations on corporate strategy and operations from 1998 to 2003. Prior to business school she worked in the financial markets in Dublin and London for six years. Emma holds a joint degree in Economics and Pure Mathematics from Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland and an MBA from INSEAD, in Fontainebleau, France. She is also a board member of the Bay Area division of the March of Dimes and the Schools of the Sacred Heart in Atherton, CA.

Alex Hoffner

Alex has twenty years of experience as a strategic communications and marketing executive.  She was recently named a Principal and Chief Operating Officer at OutCast Communications, a leading technology and social media agency.  Prior to this appointment, Alex was responsible for communications efforts for the business and editorial divisions of Condé Nast’s WIRED magazine, its digital properties and all related brand extensions.  Previously, Alex spent fifteen years as an executive at GE.   During that time she worked extensively with the company's executive management team and core businesses to drive global marketing initiatives and to improve and expand communications and marketing initiatives related to innovation and technology.  Alex started her career in television, working in a variety of publicity and promotions roles at CNN and NBC.  She graduated with a B.A. in English from Denison University.   Alex has spent many years working with non-profit organizations in the areas of leadership, strategic development and marketing communications.  She lives in San Francisco with her husband and three children.

Jacqueline Shillings-Holmes
Jacqueline has been actively involved with The SMART Program since becoming a SMART parent in 1999.   Her daughter successfully completed our program in 2003 and was granted a high school scholarship to the prestigious Urban School of San Francisco.  Through her access to quality education and support services, Jacqueline’s daughter began to expand the expectations she had for herself and her future.  In the fall of 2009, she will be a Junior at Howard University, where she is enrolled in their intensive five-year Supply Chain Management Program.  Jacqueline’s input on the Board ensures that the families SMART serves are always at the forefront of our decision-making.

Scott Jordon

Scott is currently a Managing Director with Glynn Capital Management, a private equity partnership based in Menlo Park, California.  Scott joined Glynn Capital in 1999 and focuses on investments in software, business services and Internet infrastructure industries.  Prior to Glynn Capital, Scott earned his MBA from the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University after working several years with Westbrook Partners, a private equity investment firm in New York City.  Scott also spent several years in the Mergers and Acquisitions Department of Morgan Stanley & Co. in their New York and Hong Kong offices.  Scott graduated with honors and Phi Beta Kappa from the University of California at Berkeley.  Scott has been actively involved in educational non-profits his entire life and passionately believes in the importance of improving educational quality and access for all children.  Scott joined SMART’s Board in 1999.  As Treasurer and chair of the Finance Committee, Scott serves as SMART’s Chief Financial Officer.

Roger Lee

Roger Lee is one of SMART’s co-founders and currently serves as Vice President and chair of the Development Committee.  Roger is currently a General Partner with Battery Ventures, focusing on investments in enterprise software and Internet infrastructure. Previously, Roger was a co-founder of Corio, a leading managed service provider.  At Corio, Roger first oversaw all business development activities and later became the General Manager of the eCommerce business unit.  Prior to Corio, Roger worked as the Manager of Internet Products at Edify.  In addition, Roger was also the co-founder and President of NetMarket, a software and services company that developed transaction security software for the Internet, acquired by Cendant Corporation in November of 1994.  Roger graduated with distinction from Yale University with a BA of Political Science.

Charles M. Linehan (Chip)

Chip is one of the co-founders of SMART, and serves as the President of its Board of Directors.  Chip is currently a General Partner at New Enterprise Associates (NEA), a private equity partnership based in Menlo Park, California with $11 billion of capital under management.  Chip joined NEA in 1992 and specializes in health care investments.  Chip received a Bachelor of Arts (cum laude) from Harvard University.  Chip also serves on the Harvard College Fund West Coast Council as well as the Board of Trustees of The Gilman School.  Chip became involved with SMART because of his passionate belief in the importance of offering educational opportunities to bright and motivated students regardless of their socioeconomic circumstances.

Matthew Niehaus
Matt is a partner at Battery Ventures, where he focuses on investments in communication services and infrastructure technologies. Prior to Battery, Matt was Director of Strategic Development at VeriSign, a digital infrastructure service company. He joined VeriSign in 2005 when it acquired R4 Global Solutions, Inc, a leading RFID (radio frequency identification) technology firm that Matt co-founded. Previously, Matt was an investor at Telegraph Hill Communications Partners and J.P. Morgan Capital.  Matt began his career as an Associate at J.P. Morgan & Co., handling investment banking transactions for the Mergers and Acquisitions group. He graduated cum laude from Dartmouth College with a B.A. in History.  Matt brings to SMART years of experience working with organizations that provide low-income youth with quality education.  He feels very strongly that the most fruitful investment is one that is made in a child's future.

Kasey O'Connell

Ted Saltveit
Ted has worked with SMART students for many years as an independent school administrator, teacher, admissions and placement counselor. Currently an English teacher and eighth grade Dean at Marin Country Day School, Ted first worked with SMART students during his eight years as Upper School Head at Cathedral School for Boys. In this capacity, Ted interviewed prospective candidates from SMART, guided their transitions to private school and helped place graduating SMART students into Bay Area independent high schools.

Ted has worked at Bay Area independent schools throughout his career, working as a teacher, admissions counselor and administrator at SMART feeder schools Stuart Hall for Boys and the Hamlin School. He has a Bachelor’s degree in history from UC Berkeley and a Master’s Degree in Political Science from UC Davis. A product of private schools in Portland, Oregon, Ted has a lifelong passion for creating diversity and opportunity for all students at private school. He believes that SMART students enhance the learning process for all students at the schools they attend. Ted’s wife Lori is a high school teacher at Stuart Hall High School in San Francisco and they have a sixth grade daughter, Maria.  Ted enjoys all kinds of sports and literature and has traveled throughout every continent with the exception of Antarctica.

Jennifer Goldstock Wright (Director Emeritus)
Jennifer is one of the co-founders of SMART and was SMART’s first Executive Director.  Currently, Jenny lives and works in New York where she started her own business as an Independent Philanthropic Advisor.  In this capacity, she has worked with trusts, wealthy individuals, family and corporate foundations, professional athletes, entertainers and nonprofit organizations.  With these clients she has performed all roles from creating new nonprofit organizations to securing nonprofit status, to creating by-laws, to building a board, to running the day-to-day programs.   Prior to starting her own business, Jenny served as the Executive Director of The Chilton Foundation, a private family foundation for a hedge fund manager in Connecticut. Prior to that, Jenny was a consultant to myriad nonprofit organizations focused on education and youth services. Jenny advised these organizations on how to create new programs, establish new systems within existing programs, correct problems within management structures, and evaluate success to instill best practices. Jenny received her Bachelor’s degree at Skidmore College and her Master of Education from Harvard University.
