Scott Crabill

Scott is a Managing Partner of Thoma Bravo LLC, a leading private equity investment firm based in San Francisco with $3 billion of capital under management.  Scott joined Thoma Bravo in 2002 and focuses on investments in the education and software industries.  In the education industry, Scott has experience on the Board of Directors of Plato Learning, a provider of computer based and e-learning instruction for K-12 learners; Datatel, a provider of student information systems and other software to higher education; and Excelligence Learning, a distributor of education products to daycare centers, preschools and elementary schools.  In the software industry, Scott has experience on the Board of Directors of Activant, Attachmate, Consona, Entrust, JDA, Manatron, Prophet 21, Roadnet, Vector and Vision Solutions.  Prior to joining Thoma Bravo, Scott was a professional at Summit Partners focused on growth equity investments in software, internet and education technology companies.  He also spent several years as a product manager at Hewlett Packard and in Corporate Finance at Alex Brown.

 

Scott received a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Engineering from Stanford University and earned his MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business.  He grew up in Ohio, attended public school and completed summer programs at both Phillips Exeter Academy and Choate Rosemary Hall.  Scott grew up in a house of educators as both his mother and sister are teachers.  He and his wife Angela live in San Francisco with their daughter, Karis, and son, Wade.

Jad Dunning (Chair)

Jad brings over 13 years of experience in start-up environments and well-established growth companies to his role as President and CEO of DriverSide, Inc. Since 1995, Jad has been at the forefront of developing and growing online consumer services.

Prior to founding DriverSide, Jad was President of StepUp Commerce, which was acquired by Intuit in August 2006.  Earlier, he served as General Manager of Direct Marketing at Peet’s Coffee & Tea, where his oversight over the direct channel resulted in consecutive year-over-year 100% increases in sales growth rate. In 1996, he founded and launched CompareNet, Inc., an online feature comparison site. In 1999, CompareNet was acquired by Microsoft where Jad then led and grew MSN Shopping with revenues growing 60% over the previous year. Jad earned a B.A. at St. Lawrence University and a JD at the University of San Francisco.  An inactive member of the California Bar, he practiced law in San Francisco at the outset of his career.  He also serves as Board Chair of Cathedral School for Boys, an independent K–8 school in San Francisco.  He and his wife Christina live in San Francisco with their two sons Mason and Jack and their dog Isabelle

Quinlan D. Fang (Secretary)

Quinlan is a Partner at VII Peaks Capital, an investment firm focused on distressed corporate debt. Previously, Quinlan worked at Vista Equity Partners, a private equity firm focused on software and technology-enabled companies. At Vista, he completed leveraged buyouts of enterprise software and technology-enabled companies totaling over $1 billion in transaction value. He also served as a Board Observer for three portfolio companies and advised their senior management in implementing various operational and strategic initiatives. Prior to Vista, Quinlan worked in the Mergers & Acquisitions group at UBS Investment Bank where he advised software, internet, network communication and other technology companies in over $2 billion of transactions.

Quinlan graduated from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Science in Economics with concentrations in Finance and Management. He passionately believes that a strong education serves as the foundation for one's future success and has been a volunteer tutor for SMART since 2007.

Michael Ferreboeuf
Michael has served for ten years as the Head of School at The Cathedral School for Boys, a San Francisco independent school for 266 boys in K-8. He received his BA in English from the University of California, Berkeley and his MA in Education Administration from the University of San Francisco. Michael began his career in education as a middle school English teacher at Stuart Hall for Boys and was appointed Head of Middle School at Cathedral School for Boys in 1991 and Head of School in 1999. He is also a founding board member of the Community Preschool at Grace Cathedral whose mission is to provide tuition-free quality preschool education for children in the Tenderloin neighborhood. He is a native of San Francisco and lives with his wife Colleen McGarry, who is an educator in independent schools. They have one daughter, Finegan. Michael's other interests and passions include poetry, creative writing, cooking for his family and friends and coaching CSB's seventh grade basketball team.

Emma Goltz

Emma and her husband Fred have been student sponsors at SMART since 2003. Currently, Emma is full- time mother to their three young children. Prior to this, she was a manager at the San Francisco office of Bain & Company where she worked with several multinational corporations on corporate strategy and operations from 1998 to 2003. Prior to business school she worked in the financial markets in Dublin and London for six years. Emma holds a joint degree in Economics and Pure Mathematics from Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland and an MBA from INSEAD, in Fontainebleau, France. She is also a board member of the Bay Area division of the March of Dimes and the Schools of the Sacred Heart in Atherton, CA.

Alex Constantinople Hoffner
Alex has twenty years of experience as a strategic communications and marketing executive. She was recently named Partner and CEO at The OutCast Agency, a leading technology and social media agency. Prior to joining OutCast as COO in September 2010, she was responsible for communications efforts for the business and editorial divisions of Condé Nast's WIRED magazine and its digital properties.

Previously, Alex spent fifteen years at GE, where she served as general manager of corporate and marketing communications and marketing services. During that time she headed global marketing initiatives such as the launch of GE's groundbreaking ecomagination platform and imagination at work branding campaign, developed innovation tools and processes for GE business teams to achieve faster organic growth, and helped GE engage in new and interactive ways with consumers, customers, and thought-leaders.

She started her career with the company at NBC, working in a variety of publicity and promotions roles including television's top morning program, Today, before rising to vice president of NBC News communications. Alex began her career with CNN, as a publicist for Larry King Live. She graduated with a B.A. in English from Denison University. Alex has spent many years working with non-profit organizations in the areas of leadership, strategic development and marketing communications. She lives in San Francisco with her husband and three children.

Jacqueline Shillings Holmes
Jacqueline has been actively involved with The SMART Program since becoming a SMART parent in 1999.   Her daughter successfully completed our program in 2003 and was granted a high school scholarship to the prestigious Urban School of San Francisco.  Through her access to quality education and support services, Jacqueline’s daughter began to expand the expectations she had for herself and her future.  In the fall of 2009, she will be a Junior at Howard University, where she is enrolled in their intensive five-year Supply Chain Management Program.  Jacqueline’s input on the Board ensures that the families SMART serves are always at the forefront of our decision-making.

Scott Jordon (Vice-Chair)

Scott is currently a Managing Director with Glynn Capital Management, a private equity partnership based in Menlo Park, California.  Scott joined Glynn Capital in 1999 and focuses on investments in software, business services and Internet infrastructure industries.  Prior to Glynn Capital, Scott earned his MBA from the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University after working several years with Westbrook Partners, a private equity investment firm in New York City.  Scott also spent several years in the Mergers and Acquisitions Department of Morgan Stanley & Co. in their New York and Hong Kong offices.  Scott graduated with honors and Phi Beta Kappa from the University of California at Berkeley.  Scott has been actively involved in educational non-profits his entire life and passionately believes in the importance of improving educational quality and access for all children.  Scott joined SMART’s Board in 1999.  As Treasurer and chair of the Finance Committee, Scott serves as SMART’s Chief Financial Officer.

Roger Lee (Co-Founder)

Roger Lee is one of SMART’s co-founders and currently serves as Vice President and chair of the Development Committee.  Roger is currently a General Partner with Battery Ventures, focusing on investments in enterprise software and Internet infrastructure. Previously, Roger was a co-founder of Corio, a leading managed service provider.  At Corio, Roger first oversaw all business development activities and later became the General Manager of the eCommerce business unit.  Prior to Corio, Roger worked as the Manager of Internet Products at Edify.  In addition, Roger was also the co-founder and President of NetMarket, a software and services company that developed transaction security software for the Internet, acquired by Cendant Corporation in November of 1994.  Roger graduated with distinction from Yale University with a BA of Political Science.

Charles (Chip) M. Linehan (Director Emeritus & Co-Founder)

Chip is one of the co-founders of SMART, and is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Education Leadership at Harvard University.  Prior to his return to school, Chip spent twenty years at New Enterprise Associates (NEA), a private equity partnership based in Menlo Park, California with $11 billion of capital under management.  Chip received a Bachelor of Arts (cum laude) from Harvard University.  Chip became involved with SMART because of his passionate belief in the importance of offering educational opportunities to bright and motivated students regardless of their socioeconomic circumstances.

Jennifer Min

Jennifer
worked at San Francisco University High School (UHS) for eight years as a senior administrator and instructor of mathematics and economics.  As Academic Dean, she supervised and managed the overall academic program, supported the individual academic needs of students and chaired the Curriculum Committee.  She was also actively involved in the strategic planning and accreditation processes for UHS.  Jennifer served as Department Chair for the Mathematics Department and taught courses in mathematics and AP Economics during her tenure at UHS. 

Prior to joining UHS, Jennifer advised technology companies as a strategy consultant at Bain & Company in San Francisco.  Prior to Bain, Jennifer worked at Morgan Stanley & Co. in New York City as a financial analyst in the technology group.  She earned a BS from Cornell University and an MBA from Harvard Business School.    

Currently, Jennifer also serves on the Board of Trustees at Keys School, an independent K-8 school in Palo Alto, CA and she is a full-time mother of two young boys.

Matthew Niehaus
Matt is a partner at Battery Ventures, where he focuses on investments in communication services and infrastructure technologies. Prior to Battery, Matt was Director of Strategic Development at VeriSign, a digital infrastructure service company. He joined VeriSign in 2005 when it acquired R4 Global Solutions, Inc, a leading RFID (radio frequency identification) technology firm that Matt co-founded. Previously, Matt was an investor at Telegraph Hill Communications Partners and J.P. Morgan Capital.  Matt began his career as an Associate at J.P. Morgan & Co., handling investment banking transactions for the Mergers and Acquisitions group. He graduated cum laude from Dartmouth College with a B.A. in History.  Matt brings to SMART years of experience working with organizations that provide low-income youth with quality education.  He feels very strongly that the most fruitful investment is one that is made in a child's future.

Kasey O'Connell (Development Chair)
There is no greater gift than an incredible education.  Kasey and her husband Aidan have been SMART student sponsors since 2005.  Additionally as a Board Member, Kasey is involved with the SMART Goes to College fundraising event.  Kasey is currently a full-time mom raising her two boys.  When not shuttling them around, she can be found volunteering at Town School for Boys where she is an active member of the community thanks to her older son.  Kasey spent her working years in marketing, pr, sales and business development building online and interactive media companies including Disney, @Home Network and RespondTV.

Kasey holds a BA from Georgetown University and an MBA from The Anderson School at UCLA.  She grew up in the Bay Area and attended Head-Royce in Oakland.

Ted Saltveit (Program Chair)
Ted has worked with SMART students for many years as an independent school administrator, teacher, admissions and placement counselor. Currently an English teacher and eighth grade Dean at Marin Country Day School, Ted first worked with SMART students during his eight years as Upper School Head at Cathedral School for Boys. In this capacity, Ted interviewed prospective candidates from SMART, guided their transitions to private school and helped place graduating SMART students into Bay Area independent high schools.

Ted has worked at Bay Area independent schools throughout his career, working as a teacher, admissions counselor and administrator at SMART feeder schools Stuart Hall for Boys and the Hamlin School. He has a Bachelor’s degree in history from UC Berkeley and a Master’s Degree in Political Science from UC Davis. A product of private schools in Portland, Oregon, Ted has a lifelong passion for creating diversity and opportunity for all students at private school. He believes that SMART students enhance the learning process for all students at the schools they attend. Ted’s wife Lori is a high school teacher at Stuart Hall High School in San Francisco and they have a sixth grade daughter, Maria.  Ted enjoys all kinds of sports and literature and has traveled throughout every continent with the exception of Antarctica.

Jasmine Stirling
Jasmine Stirling brings more than a decade of marketing, product management, and education experience to her current role as Chief Marketing Officer at InsideTrack. InsideTrack increases college graduation rates through 1:1 student coaching, and has worked with more than 350,000 students nationwide.  Prior to InsideTrack, Jasmine was the Vice President of Marketing and Product Management for GreatSchools, a national Web site that enables more than 35 million parents to evaluate K-12 school performance each year. Prior to GreatSchools, Jasmine held senior positions in marketing and product management for consumer-focused companies. Jasmine has directed several short documentary films focused on K-12 education reform and college readiness, one of which was featured on Oprah in 2011.  Jasmine taught English in Japanese public schools as a member of the Japanese Exchange and Teaching Program. She graduated summa cum laude with a dual B.A. in Philosophy and Politics from the University of San Francisco and studied Philosophy and History at Oxford University.  She and her husband Michael live in San Francisco with their dog Maddy.

Rory Weinstein

Rory and her husband, Jamie, are active leaders and supporters at a variety of cultural and educational institutions in San Francisco, including the Jewish Community Center of San Francisco and the Contemporary Jewish Museum. Rory is currently a full-time mother to their two young children. Prior to joining the board, she worked as an Investment Banker in New York for JP Morgan Chase and UBS. Her experience included Mergers & Acquisitions and Leveraged Finance. Rory also spent several years as a volunteer with the Junior League of San Francisco on both the Jamestown Community Center and Finance Committees. Rory graduated Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Dartmouth College with a degree in Romance Languages. She also received an MBA from the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business.

Jennifer Goldstock Wright (Director Emeritus & Co-Founder)
Jennifer is one of the co-founders of SMART and was SMART’s first Executive Director.  Currently, Jenny lives and works in New York where she started her own business as an Independent Philanthropic Advisor.  In this capacity, she has worked with trusts, wealthy individuals, family and corporate foundations, professional athletes, entertainers and nonprofit organizations.  With these clients she has performed all roles from creating new nonprofit organizations to securing nonprofit status, to creating by-laws, to building a board, to running the day-to-day programs.   Prior to starting her own business, Jenny served as the Executive Director of The Chilton Foundation, a private family foundation for a hedge fund manager in Connecticut. Prior to that, Jenny was a consultant to myriad nonprofit organizations focused on education and youth services. Jenny advised these organizations on how to create new programs, establish new systems within existing programs, correct problems within management structures, and evaluate success to instill best practices. Jenny received her Bachelor’s degree at Skidmore College and her Master of Education from Harvard University.
